₹/$Rupee Exit

NRO outward remittance

What is your bank's rate costing you?

Sending money out of India from an NRO account, the rate you are quoted is not the rate the market is trading at. The difference is not itemised anywhere on your advice. Put your bank's quote in below and see it in dollars.

Negotiation

What to do with that number

A rate is quoted, not fixed. These six steps are the whole of what moves it, in the order they have to happen.
  1. 01

Ask for the rate before you authorise. The repatriation request and the rate booking are separable. Most people submit first and find out the rate after.

  2. 02

Ask for it to be routed to the treasury desk. Branches and netbanking serve the card rate — a board set once each morning. Treasury quotes live interbank. Above roughly $25,000 most banks will do this; it has names, and using them helps: treasury rate, special rate, card rate override.

  3. 03

Make the ask specific. Not “can I get a better rate” — that invites a no. Name the amount, say what mid-market is, and name the desk.

  4. 04

Get a competing quote first. Most NRIs hold accounts at two Indian banks. A rival’s rate is an anchor, and an anchor turns a request into a negotiation.

  5. 05

Remember the cap. Outward remittance from an NRO account is limited to USD 100,000 per transaction and USD 1,000,000 per financial year, so a large exit is several wires. Say so — the next one is business the bank wants.

  6. 06

Know when to stop. If they will not move past roughly half a percent on a large ticket, that is about where retail lands. Chasing another few paise is not worth another week.

The whole leak

The rate is the smallest thing going wrong

Three costs ride on an outward remittance. The tool above measures one of them, and it is the one you can check in thirty seconds — not the one that costs the most.
Measured above

The exchange rate

Typically 250–350 basis points over mid-market on a retail card rate. Invisible, because it is never itemised — it is inside the rate itself. This is the part the checker prices exactly, using the rate you were quoted.
Estimated

The flat charges

An outward SWIFT charge debited in rupees, and a correspondent-bank deduction taken from the dollars in flight, so it never appears on your Indian bank's advice at all. Our figures for both are published typical ranges, flagged as unverified on screen.
Not modelled

The tax

On a property sale, TDS is withheld on the sale price, not the gain. A mistimed lower-deduction certificate, or a financial-year boundary missed while holding out for a better rate, costs multiples of any FX markup.

Questions

What this is, and what it refuses to be

Do you move the money?

No, and we never will. You wire it yourself, from your own NRO account, at your own bank, with your own credentials. This site does arithmetic on two numbers and shows you the result. It is not a money transmitter and holds no funds.

Is this a comparison site?

No. We never claim what any named bank charges. The only rate specific to you is the one you type in, from your own quote. The mid-market reference is published and attributed. The arithmetic between the two is the only thing we assert.

Where does the mid-market rate come from?

The European Central Bank's daily reference rate, republished by frankfurter.app, shown with its publication date. It is a daily fix, not a live tradeable price — which is the right order of magnitude against a bank card rate that is itself set once each morning.

Do you store what I type?

No. There is no database, no analytics, no cookies and no email capture. The amount and the rate never leave your browser, because the calculation runs there. Reload the page and both fields are empty again.

How much can I send out of an NRO account?

USD 1,000,000 per financial year, and USD 100,000 per transaction. A large property exit is therefore several wires, which is worth saying to your bank: the next wire is business they want.

What replaced Forms 15CA and 15CB?

From 1 April 2026, Form 145 replaced Form 15CA and Form 146 replaced Form 15CB under the Income-tax Act, 2025. Form 145 is the remitter's declaration; Form 146 is the Chartered Accountant's certificate. Remittances completed before 31 March 2026 still use the old forms.

Moving the proceeds of a property sale?

Then the rate is not your biggest problem. Timing the lower-deduction certificate, the Form 145/146 pack and the financial-year boundary is — and that work is a managed service we are building, run with a Chartered Accountant who invoices you directly. We still never touch the money.
